Mayor Randy Ecija fulfills dream of a poor Manobo-Dulangan girl to have a college diploma
SULTAN KUDARAT, Philippines –– Ms. Kenny Mamo, a 19-year old girl from Senator Ninoy Aquino town in Sultan Kudarat province, thought that her dream of becoming a “registered midwife” someday would remain a dream.
She is from Manobo-Dulangan tribe in Senator Ninoy Aquino, or popularly known as “SNA.” Her parents could not afford her to send her to college because of poverty.
“Hanggang nangarap na lang ako na maging midwife kasi malabong mangyari. Walang pera magulang ko para pag-aralin ako sa patag,” Kenny told The DIYARYO MILENYO.
When asked why she wanted to become a registered midwife, Kenny said: “Gusto kong makatulong sa mga ka-tribo ko.”
Until, one day, her parents brought her to the office of Mayor Randy Ecija Jr. and asked him to help them to send her into college.
“Humingi kami ng tulong kay Mayor Ecija ang magulang ko para makapag-aral ako ng midwife,” Kenny said. “Hindi niya kami binigo. Parang maiyak nga ako noon dahil sa sobrang-tuwa.”
Mrs. Richelle Ecija-Eugenio, the older sister of Mayor Ecija, told DIYARYO MILENYO that when she learned the interest of Kenny to finish school from her brother, she immediately offered to help, a help that would change the life of a 19-year old dreamer.
“Tinanggap ko siya agad na maging isa sa mga scholar ng La Familia Ecija,” Mrs. Ecija-Eugenio said.
“La Familia Ecija” (meaning “The Ecija Family”) is a family-based scholarship group organized by Mayor Ecija and his sister Mrs. Ecija-Eugenio, who is married to Dr. Dante Eugenio, a known “Opthalmologist” in Tacurong City that offered free eye check-up to indigents.
Kenny is now studying midwifery at Sultan Kudarat Educational Institution (SKEI) with “free board and lodging” in Tacurong City. All educational expenses were shouldered by the Ecija Family. (RASHID RH. BAJO)
