TACURONG CITY, Sultan Kudarat –– The parents of a 10-year old girl living in this city were shocked when their lone daughter told them that she does not want to celebrate her birthday with a party, and instead, she told them that she wants hundreds of food packs as their birthday gift to her.

“Na shocked kami. Ayaw niya ng birthday party. Gusto niya food packs ang iregalo namin sa kanya sa birthday niya,” Mrs. Richelle Ecija-Eugenio, the school administrator of Sultan Kudarat Educational Institution (SKEI) in Tacurong City, told Diyaryo Milenyo in a facebook messenger interview today.

Mrs. Ecija-Eugenio is referring to her daughter Drei Ecija Eugenio, who turned 10 years old yesterday (Oct. 6).

“Kahit tatay niya ay na -shock din sa sinabi niya,” she said. The girl’s father is Dr. Dante Eugenio, a known “Ophthalmologist” and philanthropist in Sultan Kudarat province.

Mrs. Eugenio said when they asked their daughter why and what she would do with the food packs, Drei told them that she will distribute it to the needy families in a remote sitio in Barangay Lagubang in Senator Ninoy Aquino (SNA) town in Sultan Kudarat province.

Drei is the niece of Randy Ecija Jr., the incumbent mayor of SNA, one of the mountain towns of the province.

Her parents bought 20 sacks of rice and several boxes of canned goods and noodles. Her family and relatives repacked it into food packs. Each food pack contains 4 kilos of rice, 3 sardines and 6 pieces noodles.

Diyaryo Milenyo learned that on October 10, Dre and her parents will travel more than 100 kilometers, from Tacurong City to Sitio Kapagayan in Barangay Lagubang in SNA, to distribute her “pa-birthday” food packs for the residents affected by the deadly COVID-19 disease there. (RASHID RH. BAJO)
