As part of the series of the events on its 35th year anniversary, the UPLB Society of Chemical Engineering Students put the period on its annual Virtual Exhibit, which was open to everyone last September 11.

The annual event showcased the application of chemical engineering in fostering renewable energy and exploring its potential in the field of Circular Economy, as well as the arising opportunities of this up-and-coming industry. The exhibit was displayed through an interactive website, and featured appealing graphics and information about the facilities that promote circular economy with just a click away.

Facing the sad reality of increasing global waste production over the years, it is time to depend on Circular Economy to commence waste eradication, efficient energy use, and ultimately to slow down the rushing calamity that is global warming. Not only does today’s society diminish the concept of a productive society but also diminishes the possibility of the Earth surviving another year in the future. The Circular Economy aims to reformat the accustomed system of production and expand the limitations of energy sources.

The Society eyes the field of chemical engineering as one to boost the development of a circular economy in the country to stay true to its founding objectives: serving the Filipino community, and uphold professional and academic excellence. Now, it is envisioned to have renewable energy in this type of economy offer new opportunities in different industries which made it the main focus of the exhibit. Featured on the virtual exhibit, Dr. Rex B. Demafelis gives his two cents with regards to the application of circular economy in various contexts.

Last year’s virtual exhibit has been a significant representation of the Society’s annual exhibits that were previously conducted at the grounds of the University of the Philippines Los Baños before the start of the pandemic. Now, the exhibit can be easily accessed by anyone! After its success, it is right to say the virtual exhibit was indeed, a ChEllenge Accepted.
