The week-long Kapnayan event for high school students this year titled “The Prescribed Dose” officially wrapped up last Saturday, February 12, 2022, as the UPLB Chemical Society concludes all activities and competitions in lined with its theme “Immunizing Minds through Chemical Literacy Against the Infodemic”.
The event was first kicked off last Monday, February 7, 2022, with an opening ceremony talk from respectful guests DOST Undersec. Dr. Renato Solidum, Dr. Veronica Migo, and Ms. Ivy Retuya. The opening ceremony was then followed by webinar about chemical literacy titled “Infoveillance” from brilliant speakers, Dr. Laureano L. Bondoc Jr. and Ms. Angelica Yang who shared about debunking common myths and misconceptions during the COVID-19 pandemic and science journalism in the time of pandemic, respectively.
One of the major competitions of Kapnayan 2022, Start Up, Chem Up: A Kapnayan Pitch Competition, was then held the next day. This competition involved students making a detailed pitch on tackling a variety of topics and problems within chemical literacy, and students from the Cebu Institute of Technology-University, Philippine Science High School Cordillera Administrative Region, and Tabaco National High School won 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place, respectively.
The third day of the event’s week was dedicated to the Science Writing Competition of Kapnayan 2022. Students who participated on this competition were able to showcase their literary composition skills by writing a feature article based on a given fact sheet under time pressure, and the students from Philippine Science High School Western Visayas Campus, Muntinlupa Science High School and University of San Carlos Senior High School North Campus were able to raise their school flags by bagging 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place respectively.
The Top of the Flask competition was then held on the fourth day. Participating student teams were given an hour and a half to create an extemporaneous pitch deck on tackling a specific context-based problem on chemical literacy. Randomized topics were given to the teams and, tackling Vaccine 101: Solving Vaccine Hesitancy, Romblon State University Laboratory Science High School and Holy Child Catholic School, Inc. proudly won 3rd and 2nd place, respectively, while University of the Philippines Rural High School won 1st place after discussing about Relevance of Chemical Literacy in Proving or Disproving Covid-19 Related Practices.
Friday was one of the most anticipated days in the week-long event as it was the day for Kapnayan 2022’s Virtual Escape Room. Students were able to encounter and solve various challenges requiring chemical literacy under time pressure, and students from Philippine Science High School Cagayan Valley Campus, Saint Francis of Assisi College, and Santa Rosa Science and Technology High School succeeded the fastest.
All winners of all competitions in the Kapnayan 2022 were announced on the sixth and final day, including the winners of the Infographic Making Competition from Marist School, Colegio San Agustin Biñan, and University of the Philippines Rural High School.
All in all, total of 43 schools from all over the Philippines put in their work and dedication in making Kapnayan 2022 successful. With that, the UPLB Chemical Society sincerely thanks all participating schools and all the sponsors who have made this event possible.
The 17th installment of Kapnayan is expected to return in 2025, hopefully in a face-to-face set up, to bring more fun and learnings to students nationwide.
