The Pambansang Koalisyon ng Kababaihan sa Kanayunan (PKKK) and allied groups call for food, health, and climate justice on International Rural Women’s Day in a solidarity rally held on October 15 at the Quezon City Memorial Circle.
More than 100 rural women leaders from the countryside and their advocates came together to recognize the critical role of women farmers, fisherfolk, indigenous people and Moros, and formal and informal workers in fighting for women’s rights, food sovereignty, climate justice, and access to health and other basic social services, among other issues.
Erwinda Sarmiento from the Agusan Manobo tribe emphasized the protection of our environment and its necessity in food security.“Pahalagahan natin ang ating kalikasan at ang ating pagkain dahil diyan nakasalalay ang mga kababaihan, ang ating mga komunidad, ang ating mabuting pamumuhay sa pamayanan.”
Janel Geconcillo, PKKK President and an organic farmer from Negros Oriental, underscored the unrecognized contribution of women in food production and the need to protect our food producers. “Ang kalakhan ng pagkain sa buong mundo, babae ang nagprodukto. Mula sa pag-identify sa binhi na ating ipupunla papunta sa hapag-kainan na para ang ating pamilya ay makakain. Ngunit sa ating sitwasyon sa ngayon, marami ang nagugutom kahit marami ang nagpupunla. Tayo ang nagproprodukto ngunit tayo ang nagugutom. Kung kayat isulong ang pagprotekta sa pagkain at ang hustisya sa klima. Pagpupugay sa mga kababaihan na gumagawa ng pagkain para mabuhay ang ating lipunan.”
Other organizations present include Oriang Women’s Movement, Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights, and Pambansang Kalipunan ng mga Manggagawang Impormal sa Pilipinas.
