Rice & Root Crops

Read Time:1 Minute, 9 Second

[by Danilo P. Cruz]

SENATOR BATO Dela Rosa is at it again. If his fellow legislators had listened to him earlier that to concentrate planting root crops like camote was more appropriate than rice production, they would not have suffered the ridicule of the people, especially our rice farmers. Indeed, some of his friends say, if we had listened to him all along, we might become the object of contemptuous or humorous derision or mockery.

Dela Rosa could have told us what was “wrong” with Filipinos eating rice, our staple food? Not at all. How could he have told us what was inappropriate with rice production when he never knew what was just right with it? How can he tell us why rice and not root crops? Any math teacher will tell you Mr. Senator that the important thing is not the answer but the solution to the rice crisis. You have the right answer but the wrong solution, and the teacher will cross out your answer. You are no nearer to understanding why people are eating rice than when you were born. I wonder how this guy survive life without eating rice.

Even now I think that the problem of rice self-sufficiency lies in the more integration and coordination of government agencies charged with the responsibility of promoting rice production.** — Sign of the Cruz/Penpower Pilipinas
