
Mental health gains spotlight in Koronadal City after series of suicide cases

KORONADAL CITY — A reported series of suicide cases here is shining a light on mental health, causing the city government to form a task force, a statement it posted on Facebook last Wednesday, June 28 said.
Those who reportedly ended their lives were [young] students, according to reports.
Suicide case is considered rare in the city in previous months but the “DepEd” [Department of Education] school’s division here said that this month of June alone, it received reports of several suicide incidents, involving high schoolers.
The DepEd said it recorded five [5] suicide cases, where three [3] are studying in public schools and the remaining two [2] are from private schools.
All the said public and private schools are located in the city, a report said.
Due to the reported string of suicide incidents, it triggered the city government to activate its Emergency Psychological Response Team.
During the recent meeting of the members of the Local Council for the Protection of Children (LCPC), all the members viewed the incidents as deemed-urgent.
They saw the necessity of forming a task force that would focus on addressing the mental health aspect of the youth, especially the young students.
The said mental health task force is reportedly chaired by Mayor Eliordo Ogena and vice-chaired by the head of the City Health Office [CHO].
