The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Region 1, in collaboration with the Regional Consumer Affairs Council (RCAC) and the City of San Fernando (CENRO) conducted a Tree Planting Activity in line with the celebration of Consumer Welfare Month (CWM) themed “GenS: Generation Sustainable.” The activity took place at the La Union Botanical Garden on 9 October 2023.

As part of the Adopt a Hectare program, the said initiative adopts a more sustainable approach as it aims to instill a sense of environmental responsibility to each participant. Likewise, this encourages them to nurture the native tree species they planted by ensuring the survival of seedlings. This also involves propagating, monitoring, and tree parenting.

DTI La Union Provincial Director Merlie D. Mebrere underscored the importance of trees as the earth’s natural purifier and encourage the people to take care of the environment by starting to shift to sustainable practices.

“Let us join hands and make a positive impact on our planet, not only today but each day of our lives. Let us be sustainable so the future generation could still enjoy the beauty of the God-given nature,” said PD Mebrere.

The RCAC agency-members who participated in the activity were representatives from Department of Health, National Telecommunications Commission, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 1, Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

In summary, 150 seedlings of Narra and Molave were planted over the identified hilly area of the Botanical Garden. END
