SULTAN KUDARAT, Philippines –– A driver of a government agency here in Isulan, the capital town of Sultan Kudarat province, has donated his blood as a belated special birthday gift for himself.

Kimi Utto, 36, a job order employee of the Sultan Kudarat 1st District Engineering Office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), said it was his first time to donate blood.

“At first masakit siya pero after few seconds, wala ng sakit. Parang gumagaan ang pakiramdam ko habang umaagos ang dugo ko papunta sa blood bag,” said Utto, a member of the 1202nd Ready Reserve Infantry Battalion (RRIBn), under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Suharto “Teng” Mangudadatu, PhD., who is also the incumbent governor of Sultan Kudarat province.

Utto was one of the 30 people who joined to the blood–donation drive of the Sultan Kudarat Chapter of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE), in partnership with Philippine Red Cross (PRC), held last week at the covered tennis court of the DPWH–SK 1st DEO.

The blood–donation drive generated a total of 14,400 cc of various types of blood from the donors, mostly members of the 1202nd RRIBn and personnel of various police stations in the province.

Utto urged others to make their birthdays more meaningful. “Walang mawawala sa atin pag nag-donate tayo ng dugo,” Utto said.

“Actually, ang pag–donate ng dugo ay maganda dahil nakakatulong tayo na mabuhay ang iba,” Utto said.

Utto’s act of donating his blood earned praises from his friends and fellow employees. All of them said they were inspired by Utto’s act of selflessness. (RASHID RH. BAJO)
